We left Herne Bay in the early hours of Friday morning for the two hour drive down to Les Thorne’s workshop.  A hearty breakfast at the Little Chef on the A31 soon put us right for the last stage of the journey.

We arrived at 09.45 and after coffee and discussions on what each of us wanted to do during the two days the real work of turning began.  Iain and Bob started a bowl each to eventually texture and colour and Terry began a complex piece of spindle work in making a lamp stand.

The day progressed well and amongst the steady consumption of tea and coffee along with the cakes and cookies some serious turning was in evidence.  The excellent results were a fine testament to the instructions from Les.  A stop for lunch at 12.30 and then back to the lathes for an afternoon of more great learning experiences. We finished at about 5.00 and went into Alresford to book into the Swan Hotel.

This is an excellent hotel in the centre of the town.  The evening meal menu offered a great selection and portions were generous.  Rooms were well appointed and comfortable and as they had TVs allowed us to view the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

The following morning we were joined at the hotel by Les and after a superb breakfast made our way back to the workshop for another fantastic day of turning.  Terry’s turn this time to do a bowl with texture and colour.  Bob set to on a large bowl and Iain began a texturing and colouring project on a holly vase.

Much discussion ensued on the quality of the opening ceremony during the tea, cakes and coffee breaks.  We continued to enjoy further excellent tutoring and all finished the day with work to be proud of.

A safe journey home arriving back in Herne Bay by early evening ended the day.  All three of us can recommend the experience and hope to return for further instruction.
